How I Built My Career By Overcoming Fear & Failure

Tune in to hear Travis’s story about growth, struggle, reflection, and reinvention of personal and professional goals!

Key Takeaways

  • 35 Year + Industry Veteran, L'Oreal National Educator, NAHA Finalist, Production Company + Education Company

  • Opened first salon after 11 years at a salon. Opened up a nail studio. Sold both after 11-13 years.

  • LESSONS LEARNED FROM SALON OWNERSHIP: You have to be more than a hairdresser. You have to be a mentor, an administrator, a marketer, a hirer, a firer, a trainer, a guest services manager, and many other things!

  • Failure is a chance to reflect and understand what went wrong, what you can work on, and assess how to do it better next time, or have an epiphany about where your professional career is/should be going.

  • Are you the common denominator of your struggles and/or failures? Date yourself and get to know you better. This will help you gain perspective.
Milestones are not as important as the moments in between and how we handle them...give up or find self-belief?

  • Nothing has come for free or easy. Everything has required a lot of commitment and work.

  • Being a good educator means you can strike a light bulb in someone’s head! Educators should be able to infect people with incredible energy to allow them to dream bigger for themselves than they ever could dream before.

  • Corporate Companies have the scale to pay and educate you in a big way, so don't get wrapped up in the haters on big brand names and corporations!

  • We have to think of ourselves as a brand.

  • We can eradicate FEAR by replacing it with Experience and Knowledge!

  • To focus, we must appreciate we cannot give 100% of ourselves to multiple projects. Put blinders on when working on each of your projects or on each of your goals so other things don’t distract you.

  • Dabble in as many things as you can before you decide to specialize. This will make you stronger and more confident if/when you decide to specialize.

The Road to Success: Understanding Tenacity, Resilience, and Balance

Tune in to hear Travis talk about overcoming failure via a discussion on tenacity, resilience, and balance…what do these terms mean to you?
Key Takeaways

  • [Tenacity -] How much do we really desire something to happen, and how much are we willing to forfeit in order to come to fruition?

  • You learn the most about yourself when you hit your bottom based on how you react.

  • Resilience refers to the ability to adapt and bounce back in adversity. It involves the capacity to withstand and recover from difficult situations, setbacks, or traumatic experiences. Resilience is often associated with emotional strength, flexibility, and maintaining a positive outlook despite adversity. Resilient individuals can cope with stress effectively, stay focused on their goals, and emerge from difficult situations with newfound strength and insight.

  • Tenacity is being persistent and determined to pursue a goal or objective. It involves an unwavering commitment to a course of action, often in the face of obstacles, challenges, or delays. Tenacity is characterized by perseverance, grit, and a refusal to give up in adversity. Tenacious individuals are willing to work tirelessly and overcome obstacles to achieve their desired outcomes.

  • Are you or the people you follow living and following through with their affirmations? Just making the affirmation does not mean it will happen.

  • Titles need to be earned. This takes proving yourself and showing others; you must accept where you are and work towards your goals because they do not just happen.

  • Failure is a self-proclaimed thing, not an absolute thing.

  • Do not fake it until you make it...Make it; don't fake it. Accept where you are and that it is okay not to know everything. Focus on learning, growing, transparency, and acceptance of where you are in your journey and experience.

  • It's okay to be imperfect and even fail. This makes you more interesting, and more people want to work with you!

  • If you work with a coach, consultant, or third party, ensure you are organized for your vision because other people will have their own ideas for you that can conflict with you or other parties. This will decrease the money you spend and the stress of trying to figure out what you want.

  • “You can't rush excellence, you just can't rush it, and expertise is built upon tremendous amounts of information, thousands of hours... so we will always use the people we look at on Instagram and our influencers as inspiration, but just know that there are thousands of hours behind all of their edited reels and all of their stories; there are thousands of hours we don't see that make them who they are. Don't skip those moments because that’s what gives you your story, and that's what makes you special."
